This is part of a series of pages on walking the hills of Penang. Click here for the index, this is a Grade 2 walk . There is a sketch map at the bottom showing the route followed.

Please visit my Penang buses page for information on accessing the starting point.

For other visits to Nibbinda, please read Nibbinda Nirvana, Nibbinda Circular and the Balik Pulau Explorer 7.

We were overdue a return visit to Nibbinda, especially as Peter van der Lans had told us how to climb directly from Balik Pulau. Unfortunately, when I went to check his Facebook page the day before, our internet connection was so poor I had to rely on what I thought he had said...  The one bit I got right was to walk up the side road from near the bus station and turn left to Santarama.

We followed the road left round the back and then things started to unravel. Yuehong was in botanical mode for the benefit of her friends in less tropical zones and anyway, she hadn't even read the instructions. So when the road showed signs of finishing, the concrete trail on the right seemed a good idea.

Well, it was for a while and then the concrete finished and the route up through the fruit got a little informal and then we got to the point where ahead was a stark choice of jungle or a rocky stream bed. Time to start again, we weren't yet ready for the hard stuff.

Back at the end of the road, we could have gone up through a different fruit orchard but something in the back of my memory suggested it was too early to abandon paths, so we took a path on the opposite side of the road that appeared to lead downhill initially, slightly counter-intuitive  However, there were no complaints, compared to the previous offering this was heaven, eventually another path came in from the left which suggested an alternative route down should we return this way.

Up above it was overcast or worse but the concrete trail climbed and ahead was a house which I suspected was the one I recalled Peter mentioning. There was nobody here and the idiot dogs were fortunately of the totally cowardly variety. Even better, the concrete trail continued up at the far end of the house although clearly no one had used it for a while. However,  it was all rather slippery and Madam begun to look a little glum, especially when the path dived into some old rubber which would mean thousands of mosquitoes. Very soon the way was blocked by fallen trees at a stream and it was time for another big rethink. (I later read that Peter had gone straight up at this point, it was just some 50-100 metres of jungle but necessarily that wasn't obvious at the time!).

Just above the entrance to the rubber was a seasonally overgrown durian estate. We scrambled up to the top terrace to the left of us and followed it round. After 100 metres or so we could see a much clearer area ahead. There was just one problem, we had to negotiate the boundary between the two estates and Yuehong decided to bring the vegetation with her. At the second attempt she came through and up above we could see electricity poles which indicated a road and when we got there, for the record, the first one said PB 14-19-10. By now it was raining and as this was the Nibbinda approach road as confirmed shortly by the gate, we decided we had come far enough.

We demolished the sole remaining bun and waited for quite a while in the shelter for the rain to pass. There was an outside chance we could have made the 14.30 501 bus but the paths were likely to be so wet and slippery that this would have invited disaster. Well that was the best possible excuse I could imagine to have some 2 hours in the Hometown Food Centre having an early dinner and drinking cold Tiger. On the way down we encountered this gorgeous stick insect. Back at what we imagined to be a short cut to Balik Pulau, we headed onwards only for the path to surprisingly die and we had to go back to our way up.

Back near the Santarama, I spotted another inviting potential short cut.

There was just one problem, someone had erected a metal fence across the path leaving just a small gap for us to squeeze through. I think the crew of the MPPP rubbish truck had the shock of their lives as we appeared.

Anyway, it was job done time. We walked through the near empty market to the bus station, picked up a kilo of rambutans and relaxed until it was time to catch our bus. At least next time we go up (or down) here we know how to do it properly.
